Summer Reading

Two co-authors of the Compassion Cultivation Training program: Thupten Jinpa (PhD) and Kelly McGonigal (PhD), have recently published new books. Both offer a fascinating read and new perspectives.

– A Fearless Heart How the Courage to Be Compassionate Can Transform Our Lives by Thupten Jinpa

– is a practical compassion training guide. It also includes insights into the fascinating life of a former monk, now a father, and a modern scholar engaged in the dialogue between modern science and ancient contemplative practices. If you don’t want to, or are not able to  take the eight week Compassion Cultivation Training – read this book. If you have taken the training and want to continue expand your compassion practice – this is a great resource.

When introducing his new book to an audience in Portland, Oregon Jinpa said: “Mindfulness opens the door; compassion is the party”.

– The Upside of Stress: Why Stress Is Good for You, and How to Get Good at It by Kelly McGonigal

– is a super engaging and fascinating read that offers a revolutionary perspective on stress (or should I say some of the most common form of suffering?). The book is very thought provoking in a very practical way. It will challenge and entertain you.  It is an ‘extension’ of Kelly’s mega popular Ted Talk on the same topic.

Favourite quote: When you embrace stress, you can transform fear into courage, isolation into connection, and suffering into meaning”.

Both books are available on Amazon (links embedded above), as well as Chapters and other outlets. Both come with a warning of being potentially life changing!
